The Real Barrier to AI Adoption: Network Connectivity Emerges as the Missing Link

New global research from DE-CIX reveals that while organizations continue accelerating AI adoption, network connectivity remains one of the biggest barriers to unlocking AI's full potential. The findings highlight how resilient, low-latency, and secure interconnection is becoming just as critical as compute capacity in enabling enterprise AI at scale.

DE-CIX, the world's leading Internet, Cloud, and AI Exchange operator, has released new research examining enterprise readiness for artificial intelligence and cloud transformation. The study reveals that although organizations remain highly confident in their AI strategies, cloud connectivity challenges continue to consume valuable IT resources and create operational inefficiencies.

According to the research, 96% of IT decision-makers believe their organizations are prepared to support future cloud and AI initiatives. However, IT teams still spend an average of 11 hours every week troubleshooting cloud connectivity issues, demonstrating that networking continues to be a significant operational challenge despite growing investment in AI infrastructure.

As enterprises increasingly deploy AI workloads across multiple cloud environments, latency, network performance, cybersecurity, and data sovereignty have emerged as critical considerations. The research finds that private interconnection is becoming an essential component of enterprise AI strategies, delivering improved reliability, lower latency, enhanced security, and predictable application performance.

Today, more than 60% of organizations already utilize private cloud connectivity, while many others are actively planning deployments. By bypassing the public Internet, private interconnection enables enterprises to optimize access to cloud services and AI platforms while improving the performance of increasingly data-intensive AI workloads.

Commenting on the findings, Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX, emphasized that while industry discussions around AI have focused primarily on GPUs, cloud infrastructure, and data centers, the underlying network remains fundamental to delivering successful AI outcomes. As enterprises continue scaling AI initiatives, resilient, high-performance interconnection will play an increasingly strategic role in supporting long-term innovation.

The research reinforces a growing industry shift toward viewing networking as a foundational pillar of AI infrastructure alongside compute, storage, and cloud services. Organizations investing in intelligent, secure, and scalable connectivity will be better positioned to support next-generation AI applications and maximize the value of their digital transformation initiatives.
